Emily, a recent graduate from North Wales School of Art and Design
studied a BA(hons) in Applied Art.

Her current collection explores the versatility and the unique
qualities of clay and consists of hand built slab vessels and
porcelain functional pieces. Representing Emily’s life growing up in
a small village situated between a quarry and the sea in North
Wales, it is built upon the memories and history that have been left
visible upon the landscape and mountainside that have echoed
around her.

The portrayal of her environment is captured perfectly in this body
of work. The juxtaposition of smooth areas contrasted against the
ripped edges, that are dramatically exaggerated naturally by the
The contrast between nature and man made is brought out and
emphasised by and throughout the making process, the lines of the
mountainside and the quarry, offset by of softness of form
replicating the closeness of the waves lapping the coast.
Her work is decorated accordingly, with sweeping gestural marks
placed alongside the rugged edges, a stark but beautiful contrast on
the smooth and very refined areas, which create the desired overall
end result.

Up and coming ceramist Hughes is very quickly building an enviable reputation and
‘one to watch’ for the future.
