Corinna Button

Biography

After completing a BA honours degree in painting, Corinna Button pursued a printmaking postgraduate degree in the UK. It was during this time that Button was impacted by the German Expressionists, whose work particularly in printmaking, left an indelible impression on her. She has dedicated many subsequent years to developing her work in etching and other forms of printmaking. Today, printmaking continues to be a medium that intrigues her and is hugely influential in the way she approaches her painting and sculpture.

People are the subjects of her work and she is intrigued by moments that, despite initially appearing quite commonplace, are (for her) charged with great significance and meaning. Her inspiration draws on experiences or predicaments she encounters in daily life, such as social gatherings, images from social media and words from a song or a poem. All these generate ideas for themes that she can build upon, “dress-up”, and weave into her work.

It is through these painted, sculpted or printed figures that Button wishes to project recognisable aspects of human experience. She wants to compel and draw the viewer in for a closer look beyond the surface.
